Launching of the application process for BIARI 2012

Brown International Advanced Research Dialogues (BIARI) represents a unique professional development initiative and provides a platform for outstanding young academics and graduates and practitioners from the global south and emerging economies to engage in a sustained, high-level intellectual and policy dialogue with leading scholars in their fields.

The dialogues will be held June 9-23, 2012 in the city of Providence, USA.

BIARI 2012 will comprise four dialogues, including a dialogue focusing on “Climate Change and its impacts: Regional Approaches”.

To understand and predict the interacting effects of increased greenhouse gas concentrations, climate and economic tele-connections, and regional scale changes in economic development and land use, interdisciplinary approaches are vital. This dialogue will bring together scholars from social, physical and life sciences to focus on the study of coupled human-natural systems at the regional level; and how such study generates templates for adaptation at local, national and regional levels, and key inputs for decision-makers. Themes will include predicted changes in regional hydrologic cycles; resilience of existing social, economic, civil, ecological and agricultural systems to likely changes; the potential of local, national or multinational institutions to increase the resilience of these systems; and what can be learned from one region to inform science and governance in other regions. Participants will develop interdisciplinary approaches through project-based collaboration and proposal writing.

Applications are especially welcome from scholars interested in evidence-based policymaking.

The Institutes are academically rigorous and admission is highly competitive. Financial support is available for international participants.

The online application process is now open through the BIARI website.

Please feel free to contact the BIARI Team with questions by writing to biari@brown.edu.

Launching of a GCCA Q&A Service for ACP Member States

In anticipation of a more comprehensive GCCA service for beneficiary countries that will include amongst other short-term technical assistance on request, workshops with follow-up activities in selected thematic fields related to Climate Change, we are pleased to announce herewith the launch of our Q&A service for ACP Member States. With this service, we hope to respond to your needs for punctual and very specific information related to the GCCA and to topics related to Climate Change. Pending the development of an on-line tool that will give access to all of the above-mentioned services, questions for the Q&A service can be preliminary sent to Lisa Verpeaux at the following e-mail address: lisa@acp.int.

To shed some light on what we understand by “punctual and specific questions”, we developed some examples of possible questions:

•             We are an NGO from Botswana, planning to implement an adaptation project in the country. What is the intra-ACP GCCA doing in Botswana?

•             The Ministry of Environment of Jamaica is planning some workshops on project development under the CDM. In that sense, we are looking for existing training materials on CDM. Would you know of any existing materials we can use?

•             We are planning the installation and operation of a wind farm in Samoa. Could you give us some references of European companies specialised in wind energy?

Looking forward to run a dynamic and useful GCCA Q&A service with you,

The Intra-ACP GCCA team

Call for Proposals: 2nd round of the AECF / REACT

Here is a new call for proposals for the 2nd round of the The Africa Enterprise Challenge Fund Renewable Energy and Adaptation to Climate Technologies (REACT) Funding Window.

Please note that supported projects must take place in one or more of the following countries in East Africa: Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda. African and international for-profit companies are eligible to apply (there is no restriction on where the applicant company is from).

The Africa Enterprise Challenge Fund (AECF) provides grants and interest free loans to businesses who wish to implement innovative, commercially viable, high impact projects in Africa in the areas of agriculture, financial services, renewable energy, and technologies for adapting to climate change.

REACT round 2 seeks proposals for business ideas that will transform the way in which clean energy is provided to rural businesses and households, provide solutions that will help small farmers adapt and reduce their vulnerability to climate change, and increase financial services in support of clean energy and climate change solutions. Proposals should combine commercial viability with development impact. Further, priority will be given to proposals that: (i) combine adaptation with low carbon benefits and/or adaptation with underpinning financial services; and (ii) take place in particularly vulnerable ecological zones.

The application deadline is December 15th, 2011.
