Brussels, 7 July 2020/OACPS: On behalf of the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS), the Secretary-General, H.E. Mr. Georges Rebelo Pinto CHIKOTI, expresses his concern about the recent violence and protests in the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia that has led to the loss of lives and several injuries following the killing of the Ethiopian Musician Haacaalu Hundeessaa on 30 June 2020. The Secretary-General conveys his deepest condolences to the family, the people and the Government of Ethiopia and wishes the injured a speedy recovery.

H.E. Mr. Chikoti fully upholds the position of the African Union (AU) on these protests, and urges all to refrain from further acts of violence and remarks that could exacerbate the situation. He calls for the pursuit of peaceful dialogue during this mourning period and welcomes the commitment by the Prime Minister, H.E Mr. Abiy Ahmed, and his Government in this regard.

The OACPS renews its support to the Government and people of the Federal Republic of Ethiopia in their efforts to maintain peace and stability in the country.
