| SG applauds Dominican Republic’s efforts to promote culture in ACP

ACP PRESS RELEASE: 3 April 2009— In his meeting with H. E. Mr. Lic José Rafael Lantigua, Minister of Culture of the Dominican Republic, President-in-Office of the ACP Ministers of Culture, the ACP Secretary-General, Sir John Kaputin, has applauded the minister for his country’s efforts in promoting culture in ACP. He took the opportunity to express his appreciation to the minister for successfully hosting the last ACP Cultural Festival in Santo Domingo, 2006. Sir John said that since Santo Domingo, a lot of work has been done to protect an industry that “means a lot to the Group”. He briefed the minister on the latest developments on cultural issues in the ACP Group and a proposal to be included in the revision of the Cotonou Agreement to give better provisions for actors and artists to participate in the upcoming events. Besides that, he said, the ACP Secretariat’s objective now is to work towards the 2010 ACP Cultural Festival. The Secretary-General confirmed that 30 million euros has been allocated under the 10th EDF, adding that the money will be protected for culture. Mr Lantigua said that his country was happy to host the ACP Festival and welcomed the Santo Domingo Resolution. He said since the festival, his country has been working hard especially in trying to reduce the digital divide with the establishment of 400 tech centres nationwide.
