NEWS: Prospects of European development aid

16 January 2012/ Worldandmedia.com: As the economic crisis deepens in Europe, reaching budget targets for overseas development is ambitious but realistic according to a spokeswoman for the bloc’s aid programmes.

“I can’t predict accurately, I don’t know what could happen …There will be a new graded co-operation so we won’t (always) provide direct aid,” Catherine Ray, spokesperson for the EU Commissioner for Development said. “But our aim is to make sure people see that increasing aid is not a luxury.”

PRESS RELEASE: ACP Group welcomes lifting of Fiji's Public Emergency Regulations

ACP PRESS RELEASE, 11 January 2012: The Secretary General of the ACP Group of States H.E Dr. Mohamed Ibn Chambas, welcomed Fiji Government’s decision to lift the Public Emergency Regulation with effect from Saturday 7th January 2012.  Speaking on behalf the ACP Group of States in Brussels, Dr. Chambas said that this was a significant move which should pave the way for inclusive internal consultations leading to credible elections and restoration of constitutional rule.

 

NEWS: Haiti to host ACP music festival network

PORT-AU-PRINCE, 11 January 2011/ Defend.ht: After stops in Africa (Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Gabon, Tanzania), Europe (Denmark), in the Indian Ocean (Réunion) and the Pacific (Vanuatu), Haiti was chosen to host the next Music Festivals Network Africa-Caribbean-Pacific (ACP).

NEWS: Ghana receives €52m from EU for tracking maternal health

Brussels, 11 January 2012/African Press Organization: The European Commission decided that starting from 2012, additional support to the tune of 110 MGHS (52 M€) will be given to Ghana to reduce maternal mortality and achieve the MDG 5 targets. This high quality project, has been selected because it aims to deliver concrete results by reducing maternal mortality and improving health care services.

ACP Secretary General bids farewell to Zambian envoy

Brussels, 9 January 2011: Zambia's Ambassador to the EU, ACP and Benelux countries, Dr. Inonge Mbikusita-Lewanika bid farewell to ACP Secretary-General, Dr. Mohamed Ibn Chambas who described her as a role model to the women of Zambia and that every girl child in her country needs to hear her story.

PRESS RELEASE: Protection of Migrants’ Rights Remains a Key Challenge in New Migration Panorama

Brussels, 18 December 2011/ ACP Observatory on Migration: The International Migrants’ Day is celebrated around the world every 18th December, ten days after the Human Rights Day. These two events are linked, since the protection of the rights of migrants remains a challenging issue in many regions of the world. The particular case of women migrants and the impact of migration in the life of women needs to be urgently tackled.

 

NEWS: Zimbabwe set to benefit from EPAs, says report

Harare, 18 December 2011/ The Standard: The Government of Zimbabwe says the Eastern and Southern Africa (ESA) regional grouping is dedicated to negotiating with the European Union (EU)’s Economic Partnership Agreements (EPAs) that meet the expectations of member countries.

The EU recently issued a statement calling on countries that have not ratified and implemented the EPAs to do so. It warned that nations that fail to ratify the agreement will not benefit from market access to Europe from January 2014.

NEWS: Pacific ACP committed to concluding comprehensive EPAs with EU in 2012

Suva, Fiji, 17 December 2011/ PIFS Press Release: Tonga’s Minister for Labour, Commerce and Industries and the Pacific ACP Lead Spokesperson, Hon. ‘Isileli Pulu on behalf of the Pacific ACP Group provided an update of the Pacific ACP Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) negotiations to the 94th ACP Council of Ministers on Friday 9th December 2011 in Brussels. 

 

ACP enlists top expert to explore future prospects of Group

Brussels, 13 December 2011: The Group of African, Caribbean and Pacific States has appointed international relations specialist Professor Dr. Mirjam van Reisen to undertake a critical study on future perspectives for the ACP Group, aimed at reviewing the value and essence of the institution and how it can effectively adapt to changing geopolitical realities.
